Destroyed Winter Military Base.

Rei saw the stairs Dwyrin pointed at, but she also saw the incredibly long hallway they had to deal with first. She looked around, trying to find something to help them. She nearly slapped herself when she realized how simple it was to slow the enemy.

She angled off toward the wall, falling somewhat behind Dwyrin, and slapped the wall. The metal raced from one wall to the other, creating a thin, but effective wall between them and the soldiers.

"It won't stop bullets, though," she said, loud enough for Dwyrin to hear, but quiet enough to not waste her breath, short as it already was.

With a quick glance back, she took in the wall. Hopefully, it would work. She kept running.
They were almost there.
No one was shooting at them.
Her lungs were burning.
She could still hear Rei's footsteps and ragged breathing.
Then they were there. She took the stairs in two's and three's, almost tripping in her haste. They just needed to find a window, now.

Rei nearly tripped over the other woman's feet as they flew up the stairs. Reaching the top, she looked around, hoping for windows. She found one directly in front of them. "Convenient."

"Right ahead of us," she gasped, more to affirm to herself that there was a means of escape available.

Coming down a set of stairs from behind them, at the other end of the hall, were more people.

This is insane

The window didn't look like it opened. Well, not in the conventional sense. Good thing it looked flimsy. She reached into the dwindling reserve of energy, and put on a burst of speed.

"Cover yourself!" she shouted, pulling the back of her shirt up over her head. She took one good last look, then closed her eyes. Dwyrin pushed off the ground, hard, and slammed her shoulder through the window. Glass went flying out of the frame and followed her to the snowy ground below.

Rei hardly thought as she followed Dwyrin out the window. The lone thought that occurred to her was that her automail probably would have faired better against the glass than Dwyrin's shoulder. However, that thought was quickly chased out of her mind as she saw the snowy ground rushing up at her.

A quick calculation said that the snow was deep enough to land in safely. She silently prayed that she had jumped farther than Dwyrin. She positioned her body so she could attempt to land on her feet and roll.

Fortunately the ground wasn't that far away. It was still far enough away to jar her teeth upon landing, though. It was awkward, due to the angle of the jump, but workable. She rolled into an ungracegul sort of half-sprawl and put her arm over her head, to protect it from falling glass.

Rei landed as she had planned, feet first. She allowed her legs to collapse beneath her, rolling to keep up her momentum. She reached her feet again, though she promptly fell again. "More speed than I thought." She heard the tinkling of glass falling and the angry shouts of the men they had just run from.

"Up on your feet," Rei said to nobody in particular. "They have long range weapons and we're in their range."

Dwyrin scrambled to her feet, and glanced back at the frame where the window had been. The people standing in the hallway were taking aim.

There was a perimeter fence on this side of the building, with a gate. It was thick and concrete and looked more like it belonged to a fortress, than out here abandoned in the snow. The gate doors had been rusted by time and moisture, and stood open.
Perfect.
She ran for the gate.

Rei raced after Dwyrin, the cold air burning her already burning lungs. She spotted the open gate and heard bullets whizzing past her head and thudding into the snow around them. She ran faster, wanting only to be away from this place and in a dry, warm, safe location.

She rounded the corner on the other side of the gate and came to a halt. Dropping her hands to her knees, she took in big gulps of fresh air, and leaned back against the cold stone. After a moment of nothing but enjoying the rest, she inspected herself and Rei.

"You've got a chunk of glass in your shin," she said pulling a similar piece out of her left arm.

Rei collapsed beside Dwyrin and breathed deeply, lungs burning still. She looked down at her leg and stared at it tiredly. "So it would seem," she sighed, hardly caring at the moment, but tiredly pulling the glass out. She heard shouts of anger from inside the strange metal fortress.

"You still have your folders I hope," she said. "It'd be a shame for you to have lost them after all the work we went through to get them."

A car pulled up in front of Rei and Dwyrin and a familiar voice came from it signaling them to get in.

"Need a ride ladies? Hop in."

Des leaned over and opened the passenger side doors and waved for them to enter.

Dwyrin looked at the car dubiously. It could be bad. Although, she supposed, at least he hadn't just driven by and shot at her. Why he would offer her a ride, she had no idea. The only thing she could come up with was Rei. But her presence hadn't stopped him from violence, before.
Or maybe somehow he didn't recognize her??
It was cold. She was exhausted and bleeding. She had no other way back, however. And...it was cold.

She adjusted the folders once more, a movement more to distract the eye from her other hand than anything.
Taking a deep breath, she steeled herself and slid into the back seat.

"Welcome. Like my commandeered ca-"

Des was cut off by the sight of Dwyrin. He shut his mouth and awaited for Rei to enter the car.

"Hey, Des," she whispered, climbing into the front seat of the car. She looked around the car, at Des, at Dwyrin. "Oh, this won't turn out well."

"Where'd you get the car?" she asked, trying to distract him from the backseat passenger.

"I stole this car from whoever was here and lookie."

Des flashed the files to Rei and Dwyrin.

"Damn right, got the files, killed some people, lets get out of here.

Des drives off from the gunfire and away from the base.
