Aaron Myester

Post by Frog Dragon on Tue Sep 13, 2011 12:37 pm

AA Username: Frog Dragon
Picture:
Name: Aaron Myester
Alias/Nicknames: Scroll Alchemist
Age: 43
Gender: Male
Weight: 73kg
Height: 176cm
Hair: Black
Eyes: Steel blue/gray
Race: Amestrian
Alliance: Resistance
Job: Medic, Research/Intelligence, Former IMP hospitals worker, then administrator (resigned).
Power/Weapon: Human Alkahestry. Aaron uses alkahestry principles in his craft, and has become very familiar with human anatomy, medical science and the workings of the human body. However, that is not where his skill ends. He also knows the workings of a human soul, and how to perform alkahestry on one. His skills allow for extensive medical alchemy, as long as the tissue is just damaged and not gone (He could heal a deep slash wound, but not regrow a severed arm). However, by using someone's soul or life as the price for alchemy, he could recover truly lost body parts.

This same skill lets him damage people as well, transmuting their organs into inviable forms. Finally, his ability to transmute the soul of a living being is his most baneful power. He typically uses this ability to drain away the soul of his enemy in exchange for expanding their tissues, constricting their nervous system and blood flow while doubly ensuring their death by exchanging away their soul. However, due to the unrefined nature of this energy, he can only use it for his area of expertise, A.K.A, molding human bodies. In addition, skilled alchemists with experience with philosopher's stones or human transmutation may be able to control their soul more readily and thus deny Aaron the chance to manipulate it with Alkahestry.

His more advanced transmutations require complicated circles, which he keeps inscribed on scrolls, earning him his moniker. All of his alkahestry requires touch.

He also has a standard handgun and a custom built wheelchair with a gas motor capable of (safely) propelling the wheelchair to around 50km/h. Otherwise, he can wheel it around with his arms.

Personality: Aaron is a helpful and kind soul, with a very active streak. He is not content to simply wish people well, he feels the need to do something to make that happen. He is also an inquisitive person with a will to learn, even in his forties. He is also rather clever and open-minded.

Despite the wrongdoing he has seen in his life and the extremes one must go to protect the world they see as good, Aaron still views killing as a necessary evil at best, even in defense of a just cause. However, it is an evil he has had to partake in. He also has a bit of a sarcastic streak, despite his general kindness. However, he is fundamentally a good man.

He doesn't let his lower-body paralyzation bother him much, and although he could fix his nervous system by shortening his lifespan, he would rather live longer.

Physical Description: This man sits in a steel wheelchair with sturdier wheels than normal and mounted with a gas motor on the underside. He wears light brown pants and a shirt with long white coat over it, resembling a lab coat. His shoes are dark leather.

He looks to be average in height and weight, and his face looks his age. He has sharp, steel blue eyes and grayish black hair, cut short despite its thickness, only partially covering his ears. His face is already slightly wrinkled, but he nevertheless maintains a smile.

History:
Long version:
Born in North City to a family of doctors, Aaron's goal from the start was to follow in his parents' footsteps. He originally intended to simply work in the North City hospital. However, he and many other new doctors were offered another job by a charity trying to set up better medical care in Ishval. He was thus sent to Ishval to work in a system named IMP (Ishvalan Medical Project).

Two years after his move, a Xingian was left to his care after being found in the outskirts of the city. He was delirious, starving and wounded, and fell unconscious quickly after being found, though he woke up three days afterwards.

"Rise and shine mister..?"
"Dao Han."
"Right then, mister Han."
"Dao will do. Now, did those brigands take anything more than money?"
"Brigands?"
"I was robbed."
"I see."
The Xingian tried to rise up to a sitting position, only to clutch his abdomen and fall back down.
"Careful there. Your wounds are pretty severe."
"Yeah, I know. Listen, is there a research book in my case? Maybe some parchments? If not, some pen and paper instead?"
"Gotcha." Aaron walked off, opening the door to the storage room at the end of the hallway. The locker was simply labeled "Xingian", but it couldn't really have been anyone else. He was the only xingian in the hospital.
Aaron returned with a stack of books and papers.
"They are all in Xingese, but here." He laid them on the stand beside the bed. The Xingian sifted through the parchments before pulling one out. A circle had been inked on it, further complicated by strange symbols placed at precise intervals and connected with crisscrossing lines. He placed it on his chest.
"Alchemy?"
"No. Alkahestry."
The xingian touched the circle, closing his eyes. The parchment glowed blue, and the xingian opened his eyes again. He put the parchment aside, swinging his legs to the side of the bed before slowly standing up without a complaint.
Aaron looked at him quizzically.
"Medical transmutation."

However, the xingian had not healed himself completely, for there were things only time could fix, even for him. Thus, he stayed for a while, even offering to teach Aaron the secrets of his craft, for he could sense that Aaron was a trustworthy person. The Xingian ended up staying longer than he had intended, for Aaron was a fast learner, and Amestrian alchemy had a lot of things useful for the Xingian to study. Aaron funded the Xingian's eventual leave as a token of gratitude and taught his trusted colleagues his new tricks as well, seeing it mostly as an enhanced medical technique. His newfound medical expertise eventually allowed him promotion to the head of the whole IMP.

Soon after the Xingian left, life became much harder for the Ishvalans. The sudden and mysterious coup had driven the Amestrian military back to its 100 year old patterns. However, Aaron and his colleagues did their best to ignore the new policy and keep up the good work in their hospitals. However, one day, a military big shot came over and decided to commandeer their main branch. He had decided to take the hospital for military purposes in case his soldiers wound up wounded... something that would likely happen with their current policies. Naturally, Aaron was furious, and marched to their hastily put up headquarters to talk with the Brigadier General himself.

"This is a PRIVATE establishment!"
"Yes, and I am commandeering it for the good of the public."
"Good of the public.. We are charity workers here! You're not here for the public, you're here for the military."
"Is there a problem?"
"Damn straight there's a problem! If you were out for the good of the public, you'd let us continue our operation! Instead, you're doing.. what? Turning it into a private military hospital? Why do you expect soldiers to get hurt in the first place, nevermind in numbers that they'd require their own hospital? Internal law enforcement here has never failed us, are you trying to cause unrest?"
"Listen up, civilian." The brigadier general had now gotten more severe and threatening.
"I'm under orders from central. Now, you're either going to submit to authority, or we can find something to arrest you for."
"#ยค&% you."
Aaron walked back to the hospital and gathered the medics, telling them they'd now have to move every patient and every piece of medical equipment they could before the military got their hands on it. Luckily, the locals were willing to borrow whatever cars they had for the undertaking. They weren't by any means happy to leave the largest settlement in Ishval outside the IMP, but they didn't really have a choice.

Some time after, an insurgent with multiple bullet wounds was brought to the new IMP main branch. He turned out to be a resigned army major, and a friend of Travis Hangman, another doctor and a close friend of Aaron. He had been injured trying to smuggle Ishvalans across the border to Aerugo. Now, the insurgent soldier wanted to talk to Aaron, and by Travis' recommendation, he made time for it.

"Evening, Major Francis Crux."
"I'm not Major anymore. And Francis will do, doctor Myester."
"Fair enough. Now, Travis told me you wanted to discuss something with me."
"Yes. I heard of what happened to your old headquarters. They still have it, don't they?"
"Yeah. Not much we can do about it."
"Well.. How long do you think the IMP is going to survive?"
"What are you implying?"
"What you're doing is very much counter to the goals of the military. They don't want the IMP here, and they have all the power."
"That depends on how directly they intend to stop us. If they come in and commandeer our hospitals, we're done. We'd never get the permits to build new ones. But getting our sponsors would be next to impossible. Even I don't know how they handle their wealth in this storm."
"But we both know they will be getting more aggressive. This is a civil war."
"Are you saying we are doomed?"
"If you don't take action, yes."
The two men stared at each other in silence. Finally, Aaron sighed.
"Fine, what do you propose?"

Thus the plan was drafted. Aaron would resign as the head of the IMP. Then he would take his state alchemist exam, being the best medical alchemist in the IMP. This he would use to get access to all sorts of government research and other information, possibly dragging out the motives and reasons behind Kurt Meyer's coup. Then, he would run to the rebellion with whatever information he had gained. He was now a charity worker turned spy for the resistance. He left Travis Hangman to handle things in the IMP in his stead.

It didn't take him long to uncover that the military was doing research on the philosopher's stone, and that someone wanted the stone for other purposes. Ultimately, he could not say much more than that the philosopher's stone was involved. However, it was at that time when the command reached him to enter the battle directly, and this was something he simply would not do. Though he had uncovered woefully little, it would have to suffice for now. He discreetly traveled back to Ishval, where he decided to visit his old home.

*knock knock*
Aaron rose up from his chair, slowly making his way to the door. He opened it to see a man in a black suit.
"Who might you be?"
"Patrick Kobant of the Amestrian army. I have some things to discuss with you. Aaron Myester, correct?" The man flashed an army insignia.
"Yes."
The man in black came inside, taking the chair opposite to Aaron.
"What did you want to discuss?"
"Your sudden disappearance raised a few eyebrows back in central."
"Is that so? I just decided to take a little vacation. Completely within the off-days allowed to an alchemist of my status, of course."
"Yes.. and what did you take with you?"
"Take? There are only personal belongings here with me."
"Ah yes, most probable. In fact, the army research archives aren't missing anything."
"So what is the reason for this visit?"
Patrick completely ignored him this time.
"However, a rather sensitive document was found misfiled after having been conspicuously missing for a few days. And you had just been transferred to that laboratory. It is only natural that you would be confused about the archiving system. You never had the document verified before taking it. It is almost as if you didn't want anyone to know you had it. Maybe to make a discreet copy..."
How could they have been this well on track? This was an army agent, probably sent to silence him. They were paranoid indeed. Aaron rose up from his chair and stepped to the side of the table. Patrick also rose up. He was surely armed. Aaron had his alkahestry, but this man probably knew of his capabilities. Aaron suddenly pulled out a scroll as he stepped forward. Patrick pulled out a gun, stepping back. Aaron couldn't reach him in time. Then there was a gunshot.

"You are executed for treason." Patrick stood over Aaron who was now on the ground on his stomach, having been laid low by a profusely bleeding leg. Patrick pointed his gun at Aaron again, firing. It drove into his lower back, striking the spine. Patrick walked away as Aaron lost consciousness.

It was pure luck that he survived. His home was near the IMP hospital, and many had heard the gunshots. He awoke in the IMP hospital. Travis, as an alkahestry student of lesser skill than him, had managed to heal most of his wounds. However, he had been comatose for a while, and Travis hadn't known how to handle nerve damage. By the time Aaron woke up, the nervous system of his lower body had both been severed by the damage caused by the bullet and then deteriorated, rendering it impervious to any attempt to mend the nervous system with alkahestry, since there wasn't enough left to fix from. Aaron would now be forever confined to a wheelchair.

After fully recovering, Aaron nevertheless stuck with the plan. He went to the resistance with what he had learned, effectively consisting of "someone wants a philosopher's stone in the upper echelons". He has mostly worked as a medic and an intelligence agent for the resistance, though he has seen his share of combat since then. He has had to use the more destructive applications of his alkahestry in practice, as well as a gun. Due to this, he requested improvements to his wheelchair from a mechanically inclined resistance member, who obliged, installing a gas motor into it and reinforcing it. He has found that the active style of the resistance suits him, having turned his life into causing a different sort of change than the one encouraged by the IMP. He continues to work with the resistance, mostly near the Ishvalan regions.

TL;DR version:
- Studied medicine in North City in his parents footsteps.
- Joined IMP (Ishvalan Medical Project), a charity effort to improve medical care in Ishval
- Learned alkahestry from an injured xingian he treated.
- Became the head of the IMP.
- Coup goes here.
- Main IMP hospital commandeered by the army. Aaron is pissed.
- In the new IMP HQ hospital, is convinced by a resistance fighter to spy for them as a state alchemist to make sure projects like IMP are not completely wiped out.
- Finds evidence of Philosopher's stone research.
- Flees back to Ishval under pretense of vacation.
- Confronted by an army agent, who shoots him twice after a short discussion, leaving him paraplegic.
- Joins the resistance fully.
- Gets awesome gas-powered wheelchair.

Other: He has a good relationship with his parents, Richard and Catherine Myester. He still keeps contact with Travis Hangman, the current head of the IMP, who has been his friend since his teen years. The IMP as a whole trusts him, and he has friends among the Ishvalans. He is also a dedicated resistance member.

Hmm, I'm not so sure about the 'draining someone else's soul' thing. Other than that it sounds good.

Hmm... I want to approve this, but I agree with Sam. There should probably be a way to negate/limit/disrupt that skill (assuming the victim/random passerby/whatever knows their stuff). It's pretty close to god-modding the way it's been explained here.

All of his alkahestry is touch-range (which I just clarified in the sheet). It also only allows him to do alkahestry within his area of expertise.

As for its offensive power, it's mostly just 100% certain, and not much worse than Scar's destruction alchemy. Both completely end you if you get within touch range. The difference is that Scar is a warrior monk and Aaron is a paraplegic who only does moderate exercise with his working body parts.

The difference is mostly that soul-draining negates any chance of a "last breath" move. While if you twist someone's heart valves into a knot, they might get a few seconds of action before they go down from lack of oxygen. However, with soul-draining, their life ends immediately.

I don't really see the problem.

That's exactly the problem. There's no chance to live. Say you got into a fight - how can anyone defend against that??
Not only that but the price of human alchemy with no philosophers stone must come from oneself, not from others.

...Not get touched by a dude in a wheelchair? Of course, I could try to logic up some counter, like how Scar's alchemy was countered by Ed on a guess.

I have several instances in the manga/brotherhood on which I am basing this on, though none match exactly.

1. Ed healing himself/May Chan healing others. Demonstrating that not all alchemy or alkahestry is human transmutation in the sense that Truth shows up to eat your limbs. It also shows that souls behave like philosopher's stones for the purposes of energy.
2. Marcoh's stunt vs Envy. He performed transmutation on Envy's core, his philosopher's stone, which were effectively his souls. He wasn't touching the stone, being in contact with the vessel of the souls (Envy) was enough. Ed did the same thing, again with Envy (though Envy voluntarily surrendered his stone there, so not sure if it applies).

Hohenheim also demonstrated that the souls effectively still have their identities, further eroding any practical difference between a soul in a stone and a soul in a body.

In writing this, I thought of a counter for the move, based on the Ed - Pride fight. Edited.

Hm... It is a very well thought out skill and I applaud you there.

Alright, I think I'll go ahead and approve this under the condition that you don't run around killing people or easily winning every fight the moment the enemy touches you. (That's probably really obvious but you never know. Razz )
